What does a cup really cost?

Pods are convenient, but the per-cup cost adds up. Compare OriginalLine, Vertuo, third-party pods, and a refillable capsule — and see how quickly a reusable pays for itself.

The numbers below are illustrative starting points — edit each field with the prices you actually pay for an accurate comparison.

OptionPer cupPer year
Nespresso OriginalLine$1.00$730.00
Nespresso Vertuo$1.25$912.50
Third-party compatible$0.44$321.20
Reusable (coffee only)$0.19$135.19

A $15.00 reusable capsule pays for itself in 59 cups versus your cheapest pod (Third-party compatible at $0.44/cup) — about 30 days at 2 cups/day.

How the math works

Cost per cup for pods is simply the pack price divided by the number of pods. For a refillable capsule, the per-cup cost is just the ground coffee you put in it (price per pound pro-rated by grams per cup); the capsule itself is a one-time cost. The break-even is the point where the money you save per cup with a reusable has covered that capsule price — after that, every cup is cheaper.

All prices here are yours to enter — we don’t hard-code or estimate live prices, because they change constantly. The defaults are only illustrative; replace them with what you actually pay for an accurate comparison.
