How to Clean a Breville Barista Express (Step by Step)
Keeping a Breville Barista Express clean is the single biggest factor in shot quality over time. The short version: flush the group head and wipe the steam wand after every session, run a cleaning tablet backflush every ~200 shots (or when the CLEAN ME light flashes — that automated cycle takes about 5 minutes), and descale every 3–6 months. Skip those steps and you will get sour shots from rancid coffee oils or sluggish flow from scale. None of it is difficult — here is every task broken down by frequency.
Daily Quick Clean (After Every Session)
These habits take under two minutes and prevent most long-term problems.
1. Purge the group head. Remove the portafilter and press the shot button for 2–3 seconds to flush hot water through the shower screen, clearing loose grounds. Wipe the screen with a damp cloth.
2. Rinse the portafilter and basket. Knock out the puck and rinse both under hot water. Do not put the portafilter in the dishwasher — heat degrades the rubber seal.
3. Purge and wipe the steam wand immediately after use. Open the steam valve for a brief burst to expel any milk drawn back into the tip, then wipe the wand with a damp cloth while still warm. Milk that dries hardens into a crust that eventually blocks the tip holes.
4. Empty the drip tray when the float rises. Rinse with warm soapy water.
Weekly Tasks
Soak the filter basket. Once a week, soak the basket in hot water with a pinch of Breville cleaning powder for 20–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This dissolves the coffee oils a simple rinse misses.
Wipe the group head gasket. Run a damp cloth around the rubber seal inside the group head. Brown residue means oxidised coffee oil — remove it before it affects flavour.
Wash the drip tray and grind bin with soapy water, rinse, and dry before replacing.
The Cleaning Cycle (When the CLEAN ME Light Flashes)
The machine tracks shot count and triggers the CLEAN ME light automatically — roughly every 200 shots [VERIFY: against Breville manual for your model]. This chemically assisted backflush clears oils from the internal brew path.
You need: the supplied rubber cleaning disc, the 1-cup single-wall filter basket, one Breville cleaning tablet, a full water tank, and a container under the spouts.
- Place the cleaning disc in the 1-cup basket, add one cleaning tablet, and lock the portafilter into the group head.
- Put a large container under the portafilter spouts.
- Start the cycle: With the machine on, press and hold 1 CUP + 2 CUP + POWER simultaneously for 3–5 seconds until the lights flash, then release. [VERIFY: exact button combination for your model variant — BES870 vs BES878]
- The cycle runs for approximately 5 minutes. The pump will cycle on and off; cloudy water will discharge — both are normal.
- When done, remove the portafilter, confirm the tablet fully dissolved, and rinse the disc, basket, and portafilter under warm water.
- Rinse the group head: Reinsert the portafilter (no disc) and run 2–3 plain 2-cup cycles. Do not skip this — chemical residue tastes soapy.
- The CLEAN ME light should reset automatically. If it stays on, see Troubleshooting below.
Descaling the Breville Barista Express
Scale builds up in the boiler and brew path, restricting flow and lowering brew temperature. The DESCALE indicator (which may share the CLEAN ME button) activates roughly every 3–6 months — sooner in hard-water areas. Remove the water filter from the tank before starting; it absorbs the descaling solution.
You need: Breville descaling solution or a compatible espresso descaler [VERIFY: Breville’s official position on third-party descalers], about 1 litre of water, and a large container.
- Empty the water tank, remove the filter, mix in the descaling solution per packet instructions, reinsert the tank, and empty the drip tray.
- Enter descale mode: With the machine off, press and hold 2 CUP, then while holding it press and hold POWER until the POWER light flashes. [VERIFY: exact sequence for your model variant]
- Coffee circuit: Press 1 CUP. The button flashes for ~25 seconds, then goes steady.
- Steam circuit: Turn the steam dial toward the steam icon. (~13 seconds) [VERIFY: dial direction against your machine’s markings]
- Hot water circuit: Turn the dial toward the water drop icon. (~8 seconds) [VERIFY: as above]
- With about half a tank remaining, repeat steps 4–5. Continue until the tank is empty.
- Refill the tank to MAX with fresh cold water. Repeat steps 4–5 to rinse, until water runs clear and odour-free.
- Press POWER to exit descale mode.
Note: Do not let more than 5 minutes pass between steps — the machine will shut off and you will need to restart.
Cleaning the Built-In Grinder
Clean the burrs every 1–2 months, or when dosing becomes inconsistent.
- Unlock and remove the bean hopper. Run the grinder until it empties.
- Twist the upper burr clockwise to unlock and lift it out. [VERIFY: direction — confirm anti-clockwise vs clockwise against your manual]
- Brush grounds from both burrs and the chute with the supplied brush. Do not wash burrs with water — moisture causes rust.
- Replace the upper burr, relock the hopper, and grind ~5 g of fresh beans to discard before your first shot.
Cleaning the Steam Wand and Avoiding Clogs
If steam is weak or uneven, dried milk is blocking the tip.
- Purge the steam valve fully for 5–10 seconds into a container.
- Use the supplied cleaning pin to clear each hole in the steam tip while still warm.
- For stubborn blockages: unscrew the tip, soak it in hot water with cleaning powder for 15–20 minutes, use the pin, rinse, and reattach.
- Purge once more to confirm even flow from all holes.
Troubleshooting
CLEAN ME light stays on after the cycle. Confirm the tablet dissolved and the full cycle ran. Run it a second time, then do the rinse flushes. If it still will not clear, power-cycle the machine (unplug for a few minutes). Contact Breville support if it persists.
Slow espresso flow. If cleaning is current, run a descale cycle. If recently descaled, check whether your grind setting drifted finer when you refilled the hopper.
Soapy taste after cleaning. You need more rinse flushes — run 3–4 additional plain 2-cup cycles through the group head.
